It was my first day on my job as a Speech Language Pathologist. Eager to begin, I intently listened to the department manager review my caseload. I distinctly remember the comment regarding one little guy, “…..and Sharon- he has autism.” Immediately, I was concerned.
Unfortunately, information regarding evidence-based intervention for children with ASD was scanty thirty-seven years ago. I certainly did not feel prepared, nor competent!
Once I met this little guy and his wonderful mother, my insecurity was quickly replaced with determination. I was determined to learn as much as I could! I realized in that moment, I had found my passion. I wanted this little guy to communicate. I wanted him to be able to tell his mother that he loved her. I wanted him to be able to play with his sisters. I wanted so much for him!
I think that it is fair to say that I helped change this little guy’s life, but the real truth is that he changed my life. His humour….his determination…his way of seeing the world…are just a few of the ways that his life impacted mine.
My passion for autism & creating awareness has continued to flourish over the years. This fire that was ignited all those years ago continues to burn as I continue to be impacted by the amazingness of people with autism AND their parents!
Today is World Autism Awareness Day, join with me in creating awareness & acceptance!
