Have you ever heard a child's first words? I have, and what an amazing experience it is!
I am an early childhood educator at Anchor’s Away Daycare. One day while we were all sitting on the floor playing trucks with all the other kiddos, a little one I work with stood up, grabbed my hand, and said MY NAME!! This might not sound like an elaborate success, however let me fill you in! This little one has been at our daycare for sometime, and he is non-verbal. He was guiding me towards the rest of the trucks, it turned out he wanted a specific toy garbage truck. What a beautiful and rewarding moment it was! It is amazing to see strategies like "Facilitative Language Techniques" pay off. We try to do more than just curriculum here, if we have a child that has special needs we address them and help in ways that we can, because we can.
After we had found the truck I gave this little guy lots of praise and reinforced the use of my name and he was so excited!! He smiled back up at me, and we shared a moment I will remember forever.
